YouTube is launching an AI-powered age estimation tool starting August 13th, designed to protect minors on the platform. Announced in July, the tool analyzes user activity data to determine a user’s true age.
This initiative aims to address the problem of underage users providing false birthdates when creating accounts. If YouTube’s AI determines an account belongs to someone under 18, the platform will automatically implement content restrictions and activate digital wellbeing features. This will create a safer online environment for younger users, safeguarding them from potentially harmful content and promoting responsible platform usage. This move reflects YouTube’s commitment to protecting its younger audience and fostering a safer online experience.
