YouTube’s gaming community reacted angrily to the company’s decision to demonetize some creators’ old videos.
The culprit is a new policy implemented by the company in November to make certain types of content more advertiser friendly. This modification to YouTube’s advertiser-friendly content guidelines completely revamped the platform’s approach to profanity and violence. The good news is that, while we don’t yet know what YouTube will do, the company appears to be listening to creators’ concerns. YouTube expanded its definition of violence to include in-game violent content “directed at a real named person or acts that are manufactured to create shocking experiences (such as brutal mass killing)” in November.
