YouTube implements new policy requiring fan accounts to disclose non-affiliation

YouTube has implemented a new policy that requires users running fan accounts to clearly indicate in their channel name or handle that they do not represent the company or artist their account revolves around. The update, set to take effect on August 21st, 2023, aims to prevent impersonation and protect creators and viewers.

Previously, YouTube’s policies did not specifically address fan accounts, only stating that channels impersonating others were not allowed on the platform. However, with the new policy, fan accounts must explicitly state their lack of affiliation with the subject of their dedication. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in the deletion of the account or channel.

According to YouTube spokesperson Ivy Choi, the intention behind the update is to safeguard creators from impersonation and assist viewers in identifying content from fan channels. Channels that claim to be fan accounts in their description but engage in activities such as posing as another channel or reuploading their content will not be permitted under the new rules.

The implementation of this policy aims to provide clarity for genuine fan channels and protect original creators from content and channels that seek to impersonate them. By distinguishing between official channels and fan accounts, YouTube intends to create a safer and more transparent environment for its users.
