Xiaomi 17 vs Xiaomi 17 Pro: Key Differences Explained

Xiaomi’s 2025 Flagships Redefine Performance and Design

Xiaomi has officially unveiled its highly anticipated Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Pro smartphones, and both models have set new standards for performance, design, and innovation. Announced on September 25, 2025, in China, these two flagship devices offer top-tier specifications, but the question remains — which one should you buy?

Let’s dive into how the Xiaomi 17 compares to the Xiaomi 17 Pro in terms of design, performance, battery, camera, and unique features.

Design and Display

Both smartphones share a premium design language, featuring a 6.3-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and IP68 dust and water resistance. However, the Xiaomi 17 Pro takes things up a notch with a 2.7-inch AMOLED rear display — a standout addition that transforms the phone into a multi-use device.

The secondary screen on the Xiaomi 17 Pro can act as a selfie viewfinder, display notifications, and even serve as a mini retro gaming display when paired with Xiaomi’s gaming controller.

While the rear screen makes the Pro variant unique, it also means that users who prefer a minimalist design might find the standard Xiaomi 17 more practical for daily use.

Performance: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Power

Under the hood, both devices pack the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, paired with 12GB or 16GB of RAM. This ensures flagship-level performance across gaming, multitasking, and AI-driven applications.

Interestingly, Xiaomi hasn’t differentiated the Pro in terms of processing power — both models deliver the same elite performance. The HyperOS 3, based on Android 16, runs smoothly on both, offering a seamless and intuitive user experience.

Camera: Subtle Yet Significant Differences

In the camera department, both the Xiaomi 17 and 17 Pro feature a 50MP primary camera and a 50MP ultra-wide lens. But the real difference lies in the telephoto sensor:

  • Xiaomi 17 – 50MP 2.6x telephoto lens
  • Xiaomi 17 Pro – 50MP 5x periscope zoom lens

The Pro’s advanced periscope setup provides enhanced zoom capabilities, making it a better choice for photography enthusiasts who prioritize versatility and detail.

Both models support 8K video recording, 4K at 120fps, and Dolby Vision HDR, ensuring cinematic-quality output.

Battery Life and Charging

Surprisingly, the Xiaomi 17 beats its Pro sibling in terms of battery capacity. It houses a massive 7000mAh silicon-carbon battery, while the 17 Pro features a 6300mAh cell.

Both support 100W wired and 50W wireless fast charging, meaning the Pro model charges slightly faster due to its smaller battery. Still, the standard Xiaomi 17 provides superior endurance, making it an excellent choice for heavy users.

Connectivity and Other Features

The Xiaomi 17 Pro includes Ultra-Wideband (UWB) support, a technology commonly seen in Apple devices like AirTags and HomePod mini. This allows for precise location tracking and smart home integration — though the feature is currently more useful within Xiaomi’s own ecosystem.

Both phones offer Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and dual-SIM 5G connectivity. In terms of build, the devices are nearly identical, with only minor differences in weight and thickness.

Pricing and Availability

The Xiaomi 17 starts at CNY 4,500, while the Xiaomi 17 Pro is priced at CNY 5,000. For now, both are available exclusively in China, with a global launch expected at MWC 2026 in Barcelona.

Given Xiaomi’s track record, international buyers may need to wait a few months before these models officially reach global markets.

Which One Should You Buy?

If you value battery life, affordability, and simplicity, the Xiaomi 17 is the better option. It delivers flagship performance, a stellar display, and an enormous battery — all at a lower cost.

However, if you’re looking for cutting-edge features, enhanced zoom photography, and the novelty of a rear display, the Xiaomi 17 Pro is the more exciting choice.

Both phones are powerhouses in their own right — and together, they solidify Xiaomi’s position as one of the most innovative smartphone manufacturers heading into 2026.

Long before Edgar Wright’s The Running Man hits theaters this week, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had been thinking about making it. He read the original 1982 novel by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman) as a boy and excitedly went to theaters in 1987 to see the film version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wright enjoyed the adaptation but was a little let down by just how different it was from the novel. Years later, after he’d become a successful… Source link
