Wrangling Data Is Becoming Critical in an AI-Driven World


Like the move to mobile, the transition to the cloud, and the onset of virtualization, the global proliferation of artificial intelligence  has fundamentally changed digital architectures.

Today’s organizations simultaneously have an unprecedented amount of data dispersed. It’s time for IT leaders to completely rethink how they approach data management in the era of AI — What new types of data are relevant? What new use cases? Operations? Skills? Processes? And Tools? If IT leaders can adequately answer these questions, they can leverage quality data to support proper AI tooling that will drive business success.

AI changes your organization’s relationship with data. Developing and deploying AI systems at scale will bring a microscope to the quality of organizations’ data quality and architectures. An added benefit of understanding use cases is that businesses will be more deliberate in implementing AI instead of focusing on being a part of the latest tech hype cycle. If IT leaders don’t implement AI with a specific plan, they will lose ROI from their AI investment, allowing valuable data to go to waste. A great way to avoid these consequences is to take use cases or implementation outside of a vacuum. As different departments develop use cases, they should partner with peers who can provide insight into the tasks AI will complete, the types of data that affect successful use cases, and the downstream impacts of acceleration AI may bring to any particular workflow.

The right tools and platforms will integrate with multiple productivity/data management systems, allowing IT decision-makers to gather insights that can help improve AI use cases.

Data federation will become important in this new AI landscape because organizations will benefit from the flexibility of managing data. Data federation, or the ability to access and deploy analytics to data stored in different places, is a critical way to encourage this flexibility. This will give organizations freedom — in both scale and cost — to deploy data while managing tradeoffs in performance. In the past, single data stores and applications would need to ingest all the data required to be successful. Through data federation, data will reside in different places depending on compliance, controls, cost, and performance.

Prioritize Data Management Before Trusting AI’s Decisions

The future of AI is one in which AI learns and makes decisions. Over the next decade, we will increasingly offload actions to increasingly capable AI agents. As AI agents move from tedious tasks (meeting summaries) and recommendations (suggested next steps) toward taking action in business-critical decisions, IT leaders must drive their data relationships even deeper to deliver on the lofty promise of the technology without losing sight of the bottom line for the business.
