WhatsApp Web to get ‘Reverse Image Search’ feature to curb misinformation

WhatsApp Web is set to roll out a new reverse image search feature designed to help users verify the authenticity of photos and combat the spread of misinformation. According to WABetaInfo, the feature, which is currently in beta testing for Android, will soon be available for WhatsApp Web users as well.

The reverse image search functionality allows users to upload photos directly to Google for verification. This tool is expected to play a crucial role in identifying manipulated or out-of-context images, providing users with additional context and ensuring the credibility of the content they receive.

How It Works

The feature can be accessed through the overflow menu by tapping the three-dot button in the image viewing interface. Once selected, Google will handle the reverse image search process. WhatsApp has clarified that it will not access the content of the images uploaded for the search.

“By integrating this feature, WhatsApp aims to empower users to make informed decisions about the content they share and receive, especially in cases where misinformation or manipulated media might be a concern. We believe that access to a reliable reverse image search can help users quickly identify the source of an image and evaluate its credibility. In addition, this feature will provide an added layer of security by giving users the tools to detect potentially deceptive content without leaving the app,” the report stated.

With the rise of fake news and doctored images, this new feature marks a significant step towards equipping users with tools to verify shared content and protect themselves from misinformation. WhatsApp’s move aligns with broader efforts to ensure the platform remains a trusted space for communication.

Long before Edgar Wright’s The Running Man hits theaters this week, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had been thinking about making it. He read the original 1982 novel by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman) as a boy and excitedly went to theaters in 1987 to see the film version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wright enjoyed the adaptation but was a little let down by just how different it was from the novel. Years later, after he’d become a successful… Source link
