WhatsApp Web Could Soon Support Direct Calling Without the Mobile App

WhatsApp’s web platform is moving closer to supporting voice and video calls, based on new updates spotted by WABetaInfo. Although calling features have been available on WhatsApp’s mobile and desktop apps, Web users have so far been limited to messaging—something that now seems set to change.

WABetaInfo recently noticed new call buttons—a phone and a video camera icon—appearing in browser-based group chats. While the feature is still in testing and not widely available, it signals WhatsApp’s plans to expand calling capabilities beyond its apps.

Last month, WhatsApp introduced a dropdown call menu for beta users, simplifying how calls are initiated within chats. The latest discovery suggests the platform is extending that functionality to web browsers.

When launched, this feature would align WhatsApp Web more closely with communication tools like Microsoft Teams and Zoom, allowing users to make calls directly from a browser like Chrome, Safari, or Edgewithout requiring any downloads.

While an official rollout timeline hasn’t been announced yet, the feature is expected to make WhatsApp significantly more flexible for users who access it across multiple devices.

Long before Edgar Wright’s The Running Man hits theaters this week, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had been thinking about making it. He read the original 1982 novel by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman) as a boy and excitedly went to theaters in 1987 to see the film version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wright enjoyed the adaptation but was a little let down by just how different it was from the novel. Years later, after he’d become a successful… Source link
