WhatsApp has confirmed that it will soon introduce ads in its “Updates” tab, which includes Statuses and Channels, but assured users that their privacy will remain intact. According to WhatsApp head Will Cathcart, the ads will not appear in personal chats or calls, and end-to-end encryption will continue to protect private conversations. The ads will be shown based on limited information such as a user’s location, language, and how they interact with the Updates section. Users who prefer not to see ads can also choose to disable the Updates tab entirely. This marks a significant step in WhatsApp’s monetization strategy, aiming to generate revenue without compromising the core private messaging experience.
