SUMMARY

The company said in a statement that this integration stands to strengthen Uber’s mission of bringing safe, affordable and reliable rides to all Indians

Uber made the announcement on Thursday (February 22) at an event

Ride-hailing platform Uber has inked a pact with the government-backed open network for digital commerce (ONDC) to explore integration with the network to expand its range of mobility offerings.

Uber said in a statement that this integration stands to strengthen its mission of bringing safe, affordable and reliable rides to all Indians.

Uber India and South Asia’s president Prabhjeet Singh said, “Our vision for Uber in India is to serve the mobility needs of all Indians. This is in line with ONDC’s objective of democratising digital commerce. We are excited to take our first step through this MoU with ONDC to explore how we can accelerate our ambition to make Uber a platform for every Indian’s daily mobility needs. We are committed to play our part in helping speed up and strengthen India’s digital transformation.”

Uber’s global CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, on Thursday (February 22), while speaking with Infosys Chairman Nandan Nilekani at an event said that companies and governments around the world can learn from the scale and ambition of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure.

He added that as a technology company, Uber views open source tech stacks with a lot of interest and recognises the opportunities they bring for everyone.

Recently, Uber has expanded its India operations and entered Jammu and Kashmir. The company reported a 58% hike in the net loss to INR 311.3 Cr in FY23 from INR 196.7 Cr in the previous fiscal, hurt by the rising expenses.

Last year, Uber’s competitor Ola joined ONDC to start offering food delivery services on the network.

On the other hand, recently, Bengaluru-based ride hailing startup Namma Yatri also joined the network and forayed into the Delhi market.
