According to court documents, Twitter has been ordered to vacate its Boulder office as it owes three months’ rent to its landlord. The tech giant, which has experienced a period of disarray since its takeover by Elon Musk, has faced several reports of unpaid bills. While unpaid contractors during transitional periods are not uncommon, the failure to pay rent for months suggests deeper operational issues within Twitter.
Lot 2 SBO LLC, the Chicago-based landlord that owns Twitter’s office at 3401 Bluff St in Boulder, was provided a $968,000 letter of credit in February 2020. This credit has been used to cover the rent in place of regular payments, but it was depleted in March, and Twitter has not made any payments since then. The monthly rent, estimated to be around $27,000, provides an indication of the sums involved.
In May, the landlord filed a lawsuit, leading to a court order on May 31 that instructed the sheriff to assist in evicting Twitter within 49 days, before the end of July. The case, identified as 2023CV30342, is being heard in the Boulder District Court.
Once employing approximately 300 people, Twitter’s Boulder offices have seen significant downsizing due to layoffs, firings, and resignations. The current workforce is estimated to be less than half of its previous size.
TechCrunch independently verified the legal records mentioned in the Denver Business Journal’s report. However, the Sheriff’s office declined to comment until the matter is resolved. Further investigation into the case revealed another separate instance where a cleaning company is seeking $93,504 in unpaid fees from Twitter.
