Sahasra Semiconductors, named for “thousand” in Sanskrit, was founded in 2000 by an IIT Kanpur graduate. The company, based in Rajasthan, has achieved a significant milestone by commencing commercial production of India’s first domestically produced memory chips. Located in Rajasthan’s Bhiwadi district, Sahasra’s semiconductor assembly, testing, and packaging unit started production earlier this month, surpassing even Micron. The company plans to gradually increase its capacity to 30 percent by the end of the year, with further expansion in the next phase expected to begin in early 2024, focusing on advanced packaging of products, including internal memory chips.
Sahasra has received approval under two government initiatives supporting semiconductor manufacturing in India: the production-linked incentive (PLI) program and the scheme for the promotion of the manufacturing of electronic components and semiconductors (SPECS). These initiatives will provide substantial support for the company’s semiconductor production efforts. In the first phase, the company invested approximately Rs 350 crore, with a commitment of Rs 160 crore for plant and machinery. The second phase, estimated at around Rs 190 crore, will span two to three years. The company’s achievements reflect its role in bolstering India’s electronics and technology manufacturing sector.
Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, expressed optimism about India’s potential to become a significant semiconductor manufacturing hub, noting the presence of a substantial talent pool in the country.

Sahasra previously achieved recognition for being the first to sell “Made-in-India” micro-SD cards, which received a positive response on e-commerce platforms.
