Proton, the Swiss company behind Proton VPN, announced on Thursday (September 22) that it is removing its physical servers from India in response to the country’s “regressive new surveillance law.”
The company was referring to a new requirement that VPN providers collect and store user data for up to five years. In response to the new mandate, Proton has joined other companies such as ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and NordVPN in pulling servers from the country. Proton said it would implement a technical countermeasure to allow Indian users to continue using its network while avoiding the law’s logging requirements.

Long before Edgar Wright’s The Running Man hits theaters this week, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had been thinking about making it.
