Pokémon Go Level 80 Cap Leak: Fans Say New XP Requirements Are Too Easy

Pokémon Go Raises Level Cap to 80

For the first time in five years, Pokémon Go is raising its level cap — from Level 50 to Level 80 — bringing major changes to XP progression and gameplay. According to an IGN report, the update, set for release on October 15, 2025, will introduce rebalanced XP totals and a new set of level-up tasks for players between levels 70 and 80.

However, the Pokémon Go community is divided. While some welcome the streamlined leveling system, veteran players argue that it’s now too easy, diminishing the challenge that once defined endgame progression.

XP Requirements Dramatically Reduced

The most striking change comes from the new XP requirements. Previously, reaching level 50 required a lifetime total of 176 million XP. After the rebalance, that same level now only needs 12.75 million XP, with Level 80 set at 203.35 million XP in total — just 27 million more than the old Level 50 benchmark.

This means many long-time players, who already have hundreds of millions of XP accumulated, will instantly qualify for much higher levels once the update goes live.

Level-Up Tasks from 71–80

To prevent instant maxing, Niantic is adding new level-up challenges that players must complete. These tasks include:

  • Level 71: Earn 15 platinum medals, make 999 Nice Throws, and catch 100 Pokémon in one day.
  • Level 73: Purify 100 Shadow Pokémon and win 30 raids.
  • Level 75: Hatch 75 eggs and send 500 gifts to friends.
  • Level 80: Earn 50 platinum medals, win 80 GO Battle League matches, make 999 Excellent Throws, and win 80 raids.

Players note that while these tasks will take time, none are particularly difficult compared to past challenges like multi-day streaks or time-gated research missions.

Fans Divided Over Difficulty

While some welcome the easier progression, others on Reddit’s TheSilphRoad expressed disappointment.

“I’m disappointed beyond disappointment,” wrote user avaible17. “I was hoping for a challenge and motivation to play. These tasks can mostly be done in a day.”

Many veteran players believe the rebalance caters to newcomers, helping them “catch up” to older players as the game approaches its 10th anniversary in 2026.

New Rewards and Daily Features

In addition to the XP rebalance, players above Level 70 will enjoy permanent gameplay perks — including increased Pokémon storage, larger inventories, and better chances of becoming Lucky Friends.

A new Daily Adventure Incubator will also debut for players above Level 15, rewarding those who walk at least 1km per day with mystery eggs — potentially hatching rare Pokémon like Manaphy or Phione.

The Bigger Picture

Niantic’s latest overhaul seems designed to make Pokémon Go more inclusive and accessible to newer players while keeping engagement high through daily challenges. Still, for some veterans, the thrill of the grind may have just disappeared.

Long before Edgar Wright’s The Running Man hits theaters this week, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had been thinking about making it. He read the original 1982 novel by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman) as a boy and excitedly went to theaters in 1987 to see the film version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wright enjoyed the adaptation but was a little let down by just how different it was from the novel. Years later, after he’d become a successful… Source link
