OpenAI launches customized instructions for ChatGPT

Reports have emerged that the custom instructions option has vanished for certain ChatGPT users. OpenAI is aware of the issue and investigating the matter. In the meantime, users may find that the function is currently unavailable to them.

OpenAI Introduces Custom Instructions for ChatGPT Users

OpenAI has recently launched custom instructions for ChatGPT users, providing them with the ability to avoid rewriting instruction prompts every time they interact with the chatbot. This feature allows users to share specific context or preferences with ChatGPT, enabling more personalized and tailored responses.

OpenAI Enhancing Chat Experience with Custom Instructions

Custom instructions offer users the opportunity to specify various details while conversing with the chatbot. For instance, a teacher can mention that they are teaching fourth-grade math. A developer can indicate their preferred code language when seeking suggestions. Additionally, users can specify their family size to receive responses tailored to their needs in meals, grocery shopping, and vacation planning.

Easy Access to Custom Instructions

To access this new feature, users can try it out on the web by clicking on their name and navigating to Settings > Beta features > Opt into Custom instructions. On iOS, the option can be found in Settings > New Features > Turn on Custom Instructions. OpenAI notes that custom instructions are available for Plus plan users, except those located in the EU and the U.K., and the feature is currently in its beta phase.

Utilizing Custom Instructions for Model Adaptation

OpenAI emphasizes that information provided through custom instructions will be used to train its API models to adapt to diverse instructions more effectively. The company aims to improve model performance by teaching it to respond in accordance with users’ instructions without going overboard. However, users have the option to opt out of this setting through their data control settings.

To maintain a safe environment, OpenAI utilizes its moderation API to scan customized instructions for potential unsafe content. If any instructions lead to harmful or hateful responses, ChatGPT will refuse to save or ignore them, ensuring a positive and respectful user experience.

In recent months, OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s availability and capabilities. This made it accessible to more users worldwide and introduced new features to enhance its functionalities. As AI technology continues to evolve, OpenAI remains committed to refining and optimizing the user experience for a broader audience.
