The Austrian Federal Railways, known as ÖBB, has officially presented its first upgraded Railjet, introducing a modernized look and improved comfort for passengers. The new Railjet, set to debut on December 12 through the Koralmtunnel, marks a major step in ÖBB’s efforts to elevate long-distance train travel across Austria and Europe.
A New Era for ÖBB Railjet Trains
The iconic ÖBB Railjet fleet, which has been in service for more than 15 years, is undergoing a full-scale modernization program. All 60 trains in the current fleet will be upgraded by 2031, aligning them with the latest generation of Railjets in terms of comfort and technology. This initiative underscores ÖBB’s commitment to sustainable and future-focused mobility solutions for Europe’s rail network.
According to Peter Hanke, Austria’s Minister for Innovation, Mobility, and Infrastructure, investing in rail technology is a vital part of the nation’s climate strategy. “Modern trains and infrastructure are essential for a successful mobility transition,” he said. By 2030, Austria plans to invest around 19.7 billion euros into railway expansion and modernization, along with an additional 6.1 billion euros into new and upgraded rolling stock.
The Railjet Upgrade: Technology Meets Passenger Comfort
The first upgraded Railjet, also called the “Koralmjet,” will be introduced on the Vienna–Lienz route starting December 14, 2025. This revamped model will also run across international lines connecting Austria with Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia, and Italy.
Each upgraded Railjet will feature new ergonomic seats in both first and second class, and completely redesigned business class seating. Enhancements include new footrests, larger folding tables, modern wood finishes, and continuous backrests that improve privacy and passenger experience. The trains will also be fitted with advanced passenger information systems, upgraded flooring, and more space for strollers and luggage.
Andreas Matthä, CEO of ÖBB, emphasized the significance of this modernization: “The Railjet upgrade improves the quality and comfort of our services while offering a sustainable alternative to purchasing entirely new trains. With the first upgraded train ready, we are excited to celebrate the opening of the Koralmtunnel.”
Sustainability and Innovation at the Core of ÖBB’s Vision
Beyond comfort, the ÖBB Railjet upgrade reflects the company’s broader mission to make rail transport greener and more efficient. ÖBB already operates on 100 percent renewable electricity, making it one of Europe’s most sustainable rail operators. In 2024 alone, the company transported 511 million passengers and 80 million tons of freight with minimal environmental impact.
With a punctuality rate of 94 percent, ÖBB remains one of the most reliable rail operators in Europe. Each year, more than 5.4 billion euros are invested in rail infrastructure and modernization to ensure that the network continues to meet future mobility needs.
A Milestone for Austria’s Transport Future
The launch of the upgraded ÖBB Railjet symbolizes not only a commitment to passenger satisfaction but also Austria’s dedication to environmentally conscious mobility. These innovations demonstrate how a historic railway company can blend tradition, technology, and sustainability to deliver world-class travel experiences.
As the new Railjets begin service in 2025, passengers can expect a higher standard of comfort, improved design, and a smoother, quieter journey—cementing ÖBB’s reputation as a leader in European rail travel. For the latest updates on transport innovation and tech-driven mobility, visit StartupNews.fyi.
