Microsoft has reportedly paused development on its dedicated Xbox handheld console, initially planned for the next console generation. This decision comes as the company prioritizes optimizing Windows 11 for handheld gaming devices.
The focus has shifted to improving Windows 11’s performance and battery efficiency to better compete with Valve’s SteamOS, known for its superior handheld experience. By enhancing Windows 11, Microsoft aims to create a more compelling platform for handheld gaming.
Notably, this pause doesn’t impact other upcoming consoles utilizing Xbox branding, such as the Asus device codenamed “Project Kennan.” Microsoft seems to be strategically re-evaluating its handheld strategy, choosing to refine the underlying operating system before committing to a specific Xbox-branded handheld. This approach suggests a broader vision for handheld gaming beyond a singular device.
