ISRO: ISRO-NASA joint effort: Two Gaganyatris complete initial training for Axiom-4 mission to ISS

The two Indian astronauts, or Gaganyatris, who were selected for the upcoming Axiom-4 mission in collaboration with NASA to the International Space Station (ISS) have completed the initial phase of training. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday announced that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla (prime candidate) and Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair (backup candidate) have completed the preliminary training.“Towards the goal of accomplishing a joint ISRO-NASA effort to the ISS, the two Gaganyatris assigned for Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) commenced their training in the USA from the first week of August 2024,” the space agency said in a statement, adding that during this phase of training, the Gaganyatris completed initial orientations for mission-related exercises.
The three-month-long training for the Gaganyatris included SpaceX suit fit checks, selection of space food, familiarisation with the ISS and Dragon spacecraft, and extensive sessions on emergency protocols and medical response.“The training included photography from space, daily operations routine, and communication protocols. One of the important highlights of this phase was training for various types of emergencies in space, including medical emergencies,” ISRO said. These exercises will equip the astronauts with the skills required for the challenging conditions of space, ensuring readiness for the mission.

The next phase for Shukla and Nair will address the remaining modules of the US Orbital Segment of the space station along with training towards conducting scientific research experiments in the microgravity environment during the mission. “In addition, the crew will train and perform different mission scenarios in the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft,” an official statement from the Indian space agency read.

NASA’s website mentioned that the mission will take place no earlier than spring (April) 2025 from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, giving enough time for training the selected astronauts. This will be Axiom Space’s fourth private astronaut mission to the ISS. The astronauts are set to spend 14 days in space where the group will participate in international scientific experiments.

Long before Edgar Wright’s The Running Man hits theaters this week, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had been thinking about making it. He read the original 1982 novel by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman) as a boy and excitedly went to theaters in 1987 to see the film version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wright enjoyed the adaptation but was a little let down by just how different it was from the novel. Years later, after he’d become a successful… Source link
