The Iron Dome is a mobile anti-rocket, anti-mortar, and anti-artillery system used by Israel to intercept short-range rockets. It can detect and intercept launches from 2.5 to 43 miles away. Each battery has three or four launchers, 20 missiles, and a radar. The system calculates the location of impact and launches a missile to intercept and destroy rockets headed for inhabited areas. The cost of each missile is estimated to be $40,000 to $50,000. The Iron Dome has been developed by Israel-owned Rafael Advanced Defense Systems with US backing.
