Instagram’s Threads app gains significant traction in India

Instagram’s Threads app is gaining significant traction in India, where users account for a third of the app’s total global downloads, as per a recent report by app intelligence firm data.ai. The report highlights India leading the charts with 33% of the downloads, followed by Brazil at 22%, the United States at 16%, Mexico at 8%, and Japan with a 5% adoption rate.

Rapid User Growth and Competition with Twitter

Within just 10 days of its launch, Instagram’s Threads surpassed 150 million users globally. The report indicates that Threads has already captured one-fifth of Twitter’s global weekly active user base. The social media platform’s weekly active user count surged 86 times last week compared to Truth Social, Twitter’s largest rival in the US, which recorded 1 million weekly active users.

Mixed Trends in Threads’ User Engagement

While the report shows impressive user growth, app research firm Sensor Tower reported a decline in Threads’ daily active users globally over the past week. Additionally, the average time spent on the app decreased by 50%, dropping from 20 minutes to 10 minutes.

Threads vs. Twitter Rivalry and Legal Dispute

Launched by Meta on July 5, the platform has emerged as a significant competitor to Twitter. Its integration with Instagram, allowing seamless movement between the two apps, has contributed to its popularity. The launch of Threads has sparked a fresh rivalry between Meta and Twitter in their quest to attract users.

Earlier this month, Twitter threatened to sue Meta over the Threads app, claiming that the latter hired ex-Twitter employees with access to Twitter’s trade secrets and highly confidential information. The legal dispute adds further tension to the competition between the two social media giants.
