Hollywood video game voice and motion capture actors, represented by SAG-AFTRA, have ratified a new contract with video game studios, effectively ending a nearly year-long strike. Artificial intelligence protections were central to the agreement, according to Sarah Elmaleh, a voice actor on the negotiation committee.
The union prioritized safeguards against AI replicating actors’ performances without consent or compensation. While specific details remain undisclosed, the agreement likely addresses issues like AI-generated voice cloning and the use of motion capture data for AI training. This landmark deal signifies a proactive step in navigating the evolving landscape of AI within the entertainment industry, setting a potential precedent for other creative sectors. The resolution of the strike promises a return to normalcy for video game production and offers some security to performers in the face of rapidly advancing AI technology.
