Indian startup UClean takes ‘live laundry’ to Africa, enters Somalia as part of 9-country expansion

UClean, India’s largest laundry and dry-cleaning chain, has announced its entry into Somalia, marking another major milestone in its global expansion journey. The brand, which already operates in countries including Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Mauritius, and the United Arab Emirates, now brings its innovative “live laundry” concept to East Africa.

The Somalia launch is part of UClean’s strategy to strengthen its presence across nine countries, with a goal of surpassing 1,000 outlets globally within the next 18 months. The company currently runs nearly 700 stores across India, serving over 2 million customers annually in more than 200 cities worldwide

“Our foray into Somalia reinforces UClean’s mission of taking organized and professional laundry care to underserved markets across the globe,” said Arunabh Sinha, Founder & CEO of UClean. “We’ve seen remarkable interest from entrepreneurs in Africa who are keen to adopt our proven franchise model. This expansion reflects how an Indian-origin brand can set new benchmarks for quality and consistency internationally.”

The global franchise market, valued at approximately USD 160 billion in 2023, is projected to cross USD 250 billion by 2031. UClean aims to be a key player in this growth by empowering local entrepreneurs with its scalable and profitable business model.

UClean’s signature “live laundry” format—where customers can watch their clothes being washed and dry-cleaned in real-time—continues to be a major differentiator. In addition, the brand is introducing allied cleaning services such as home and upholstery care, positioning itself as a comprehensive cleaning solutions provider.

Founded in 2017 by Arunabh Sinha and Gunjan Taneja, UClean has raised around USD 1.6 million from investors including Franchise India Holdings, Rajiv Jalan, and US-based angel investor Anubhav Chopra. Bollywood actors Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Khemu are among the brand’s early partners and supporters.

With its entry into Somalia, UClean is further strengthening its foothold in Africa, while continuing to explore new opportunities in the Middle East and South Asia. The company is also expanding its in-house training initiative, UClean Pathshala, to help franchisees across borders maintain consistent quality and operational excellence.
