India Post has launched DIGIPIN, a digital address system designed to upgrade the traditional PIN code by assigning a unique 10-character alphanumeric code to every location based on accurate geolocation data. Created in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s NRSC, the system maps precise 4×4 meter areas using satellite-based coordinates. This advancement aims to enhance the accuracy of deliveries, emergency services, and navigation, particularly in remote or unstructured regions. Users can easily generate their DIGIPIN through an online portal with any GPS-enabled device. Importantly, the system maintains user privacy by not storing any personal information. DIGIPIN marks a major step in digitizing and improving India’s addressing and postal infrastructure.
