India must build its own GPUs to compete in AI, says Vinod Dham

India must urgently build its own GPUs if it wants to compete in the global AI race, said Vinod Dham, Advisor to the India Semiconductor Mission and widely known as the “Father of the Pentium.”

Speaking to exclusively to CNBC-TV18, the Padma Bhushan awardee said, “Just like India broke out and built its own nuclear bomb, we need to figure out how to make our own GPUs.” He added that AI has become a modern-day arms race, and the underlying hardware is now as strategic as uranium.
