As technology becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, ChatGPT has found itself at the center of an unusual incident in Greece. A woman has reportedly filed for divorce after claiming the AI chatbot revealed her husband’s infidelity—by interpreting coffee cup grounds.
The woman, married for over 12 years and a mother of two, used ChatGPT in a modern take on tasseography, the traditional art of reading coffee residue to tell fortunes. According to Greek City Times, she uploaded photos of both her and her husband’s coffee cups and asked the AI to analyze the patterns.
Her husband dismissed the whole episode, telling a local TV station, “I thought it was a joke. But she was serious. She asked me to leave, told the kids about the divorce, and then I got a call from a lawyer. That’s when it hit me—this wasn’t going away.”
He added that his wife had previously believed in mystical practices, including astrology, and that this wasn’t her first such experience. Just three days after the AI reading, she served him formal divorce papers, refusing a mutual settlement.
The husband’s lawyer has stated that the AI-generated reading holds no legal ground and reaffirmed his client’s innocence. The case has since sparked widespread debate on Greek social media, with many questioning the growing influence of artificial intelligence and superstition in relationships. Legal experts have weighed in, noting that AI claims—especially in such contexts—carry no weight in court.
