Google faces a new EU antitrust complaint regarding its AI Overviews, filed by a coalition of independent publishers. These publishers are concerned that the AI-generated summaries, appearing above traditional search results, are causing “irreparable harm” to their businesses. They are requesting an interim measure to halt the alleged damage.
AI Overviews, which are currently deployed in over 100 countries and now feature advertisements, represent Google’s significant investment in integrating AI into its core search function. However, the complaint suggests that this integration may be unfairly disadvantaging independent publishers by potentially reducing traffic to their websites, impacting their revenue streams. The EU is now tasked with investigating whether Google’s AI Overviews are violating antitrust regulations.
