Google set to launch its first foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold, at upcoming Google IO event

Google is finally set to launch its first foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold, after two years of speculation. The tech giant will unveil the Pixel Fold at the upcoming Google IO event on May 10. The smartphone is expected to come in a gold colour, but there may be other options at launch.

In a promotional video released by Google, the Pixel Fold appears bulky, with a horizontal camera bar on the back, similar to the one on the Pixel 7 Pro. The camera will likely feature three sensors for wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto photography. The cover display of the Pixel Fold appears to be wider than that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, which is similar to what we have seen on Oppo Find N and Find N2.

The Pixel Fold will have two cameras for selfies, with one on the cover display and the other on the main screen. While Google has not officially confirmed the specifications, leaked information suggests that the cover display may offer a 5.8-inch viewing area, while the main screen may provide a 7.6-inch viewing area. Both displays may feature a 120Hz refresh rate and support technologies such as HDR and HDR10+ for a sharper and more vivid viewing experience.

The Pixel Fold may be powered by Google Tensor G2 SoC, which also features on the Pixel 7 series, and may have the same camera setup as the Pixel 7 Pro, which includes a 50-megapixel wide camera, a 48-megapixel telephoto sensor, and a 10.2-inch ultra-wide camera.

As a Google phone, the Pixel Fold will likely come with a tailored form of Android for this form factor. The price of the Pixel Fold is expected to be over $1,700 (roughly Rs 1.40 lakh), which is not surprising given the high-end specifications and the foldable form factor.

Along with the Pixel Fold, Google will also launch the Pixel 7a and Google Pixel tablet at the Google IO event. It remains to be seen how the Pixel Fold will perform in the competitive foldable smartphone market, but it will be interesting to see how Google’s first foray into the foldable space fares.
