Google removed over 2,000 loan apps from the India Play store since January

Google has removed over 2,000 loan apps from the India Play store since January. According to a PTI report, the primary reasons for the ban were violations of norms, misrepresentation of information, and questionable offline behaviour.

Furthermore, Google is considering stricter policies for greater checks in the space, according to Saikat Mitra, Senior Director and Head of Trust and Safety at Google APAC (Asia Pacific region). Mitra described online harm as a “global phenomenon,” and stated that the tech giant is committed to complying with regulations in all jurisdictions in which it operates. According to Mitra, the crackdown on loan apps was based on leads and inputs received. He also admitted that the loan app issue had reached a tipping point.
