Google introduces generative AI-powered search experience in search labs

Google has announced the opening of Search Labs, a new program that allows users to sign up and test new generative AI capabilities in Search before their wider release. This comes after Google teased the AI-powered Search experience at its I/O event two weeks ago.

Users who signed up for Search Labs will receive an email notification when they can start testing the new generative AI features in Search. For those who haven’t signed up yet, they can do so by tapping the Labs icon in the latest version of the Google app on Android and iOS or on Chrome desktop.

Once enrolled in the experiment, the generative AI-powered Search experience aims to help users understand topics more quickly and accomplish tasks more easily. Google states that with this update, users can easily grasp new or complex topics. For instance, when searching for information on a topic that typically requires multiple queries, Search will provide an AI-powered snapshot that helps users understand the factors to consider when typing in a query, such as “learning ukulele vs guitar.”

The Search Generative Experience also offers quick tips for specific questions. Users searching for solutions to specific problems, such as removing coffee stains from a wool sweater or renewing a passport quickly, will be presented with pointers and a range of options to assist them in taking the next step.

Furthermore, the new search experience integrates with Shopping. Users can search for specific products, like “Peel and stick wallpaper for kitchen,” and learn important details such as ease of removal. They will also receive a list of options, including price, customer ratings, and links to make purchases.

Google emphasizes that users can explore further by asking follow-up questions or selecting suggested next steps, which will take them into a conversational mode where they can delve deeper into the topic. Context from previous questions will be carried over.

Google acknowledges that this experiment is the first step in incorporating generative AI into Search, and they plan to make updates and improvements over time. They encourage users to test out these new capabilities and provide feedback as they continue to enhance the search experience.

Long before Edgar Wright’s The Running Man hits theaters this week, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had been thinking about making it. He read the original 1982 novel by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman) as a boy and excitedly went to theaters in 1987 to see the film version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wright enjoyed the adaptation but was a little let down by just how different it was from the novel. Years later, after he’d become a successful… Source link
