Google has rolled out a series of significant updates to its Maps application in India as the year winds down, aiming to enhance user experience and pave the way for future improvements. Among these updates is the integration of Lens, an AI-driven feature simplifies the search process within the app.
In an official blog statement, Google unveiled the introduction of Lens in Maps specifically for the Indian market. “With the Lens in Maps feature, users can conveniently point their camera down a street, instantly accessing information about nearby restaurants and cafes,” Google explained.
Address Descriptors, another novel feature tailored for India, has been introduced. This feature automatically identifies pertinent landmarks and area names surrounding a pinned address, enhancing user experience by providing relevant location references.
Google is expanding Live View walking navigation in India, enabling users to view directions superimposed on the Maps screen. “The feature will aid users in quickly determining the right direction to follow,” stated Miriam Daniel, VP and GM of Google Maps.
The tech giant’s goal with Maps has always been to make real-world information accessible for everyone. “AI has supercharged the way we map for nearly a decade, enabling us to build a comprehensive, up-to-date, and helpful map,” Daniel emphasized.
Additional features include fuel-efficient routing, offering eco-friendly alternative routes to minimize CO2 emissions. Furthermore, Google is extending the Where Is My Train app to include Mumbai and Kolkata Local Trains, with plans for expansion to more cities in the future.
