Google enhances nearby share for seamless windows-to-Android file transfers

Google has been diligently improving the speed and reliability of file transfers between Windows PCs and Android devices since the feature’s preview. Recent updates have focused on reducing crashes and increasing the success rate of file transfers.

Google Impressive Usage Statistics for Nearby Share

With over 1.7 million installations and more than 50 million files transferred, Nearby Share has gained significant traction among users. Photos and videos are predictably the most popular file types, but the feature also supports documents, audio files, and folders.

Google Estimated File Transfer Time Introduced in Stable Launch

In celebration of the stable launch of Nearby Share for Windows, users will now see an estimated file transfer time, especially useful when sending large files like videos or entire folders. This feature complements the existing circular indicator and other transfer time estimates.

Image Preview Added to Notifications for Enhanced Confirmation

Notifications from Nearby Share will now include an image preview, allowing users to confirm the received file along with its save location.

Future Plans and System Requirements

Google is actively partnering with manufacturers to integrate Nearby Share into select Windows PCs, with HP’s Dragonfly Pro being one of the first to get the app. The company also promises to introduce “new functionality” as they continue refining Nearby Share.

For users to utilize Nearby Share on Windows, they need a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or newer, with ARM devices not currently supported. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet must be enabled on both devices, and they need to be within approximately 16 feet (5 meters) of each other on the same network. The visibility options, such as Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, and No one, are consistent with those available on Android devices, with the middle two options requiring users to sign in to their Google Account.
