Southbound Lanes Closed After Major Crash Amid Wet Conditions
Fort Worth weather turned treacherous Friday evening as heavy rain and slick roads contributed to a major crash on Interstate 820 near Willbarger Street, forcing authorities to close all southbound lanes. The incident, reported by WFAA weather and traffic teams, caused significant delays as first responders worked to clear the scene.
The crash, which occurred around 7:30 p.m., involved multiple vehicles, though officials have not yet confirmed the cause or the number of injuries. WFAA noted that traffic diversions remain in place, and drivers were advised to avoid the area until further notice.
“Fort Worth drivers are urged to slow down and keep extra distance on wet roads,” said a statement from the Fort Worth Police Department. “Visibility is low, and several secondary crashes have been reported throughout Tarrant County.”
Heavy Rain Soaks Fort Worth and Surrounding Areas
According to the WFAA weather forecast, Friday evening brought a strong band of storms through the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, with up to two inches of rain recorded in parts of Fort Worth and Arlington. The system, fueled by warm, humid Gulf air, created hazardous driving conditions and brief street flooding in low-lying areas.
Meteorologists warned that more rain is possible through Saturday morning, with thunderstorms expected to continue intermittently before clearing late in the weekend.
“The good news is the rain will taper off by Sunday,” said WFAA meteorologist Kyle Roberts, “but tonight’s commute remains a concern with ponding on major roads and ongoing crashes on I-820 and I-35.”
Cooler Weekend Ahead After the Storms
Despite the wet end to the week, Fort Worth weather is set for a cooler and drier weekend. Once the storm system moves east, temperatures are expected to drop into the low 50s overnight with highs near 72°F on Saturday.
Sunday should bring clear skies, light winds, and a refreshing taste of fall across North Texas. However, forecasters caution that another cold front could arrive early next week, keeping temperatures below seasonal averages.
Weekend Forecast for Fort Worth:
- Friday night: Heavy rain, thunder possible, lows near 55°F
- Saturday: Cloudy early, clearing by afternoon, high 72°F
- Sunday: Sunny and mild, high 75°F, low humidity
WFAA Weather Advises Caution for Evening Commute
The WFAA weather team continues to urge drivers to monitor radar updates and stay alert for rapidly changing road conditions. With standing water reported on several highways — including I-20, I-30, and Loop 820 — traffic is expected to remain slow throughout the evening.
“Even a thin layer of water on the road can cause hydroplaning,” Roberts added. “Drivers should reduce speed, avoid sudden braking, and keep headlights on in heavy rain.”
The WFAA traffic map shows congestion stretching several miles north and south of Willbarger Street as cleanup crews work to reopen lanes. Authorities said they expect southbound I-820 to reopen by early Saturday morning, weather permitting.
Safety Tips for Wet Weather Driving in Fort Worth
With ongoing storms across North Texas, officials shared key reminders for safe travel during adverse Fort Worth weather:
- Slow down — wet roads can double stopping distances.
- Avoid flooded streets, even shallow water can hide debris or road damage.
- Keep headlights on, even during daylight hours, for better visibility.
- Check tires and wipers, especially ahead of next week’s predicted showers.
Residents Brace for More Rain Next Week
While this weekend promises a brief dry spell, meteorologists say another low-pressure system could bring rain back to Fort Worth and Dallas by Wednesday or Thursday. The upcoming system is expected to be weaker but could still bring light to moderate showers.
“After a record-hot summer, this October pattern of storms is helping recharge North Texas soil and reservoirs,” WFAA’s Roberts said. “It’s a welcome change — even if it makes commutes a little messy.”
