Elon Musk reveals he bought Twitter because he had to, not because he wanted to

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, recently spoke to BBC reporter James Clayton in a rare interview on Twitter Spaces. During the interview, Clayton asked Musk about his purchase of Twitter and whether he did it willingly or under duress.

According to Musk, he only went through with the deal because he believed that he would be forced to do so legally. The court case at the time involved Twitter trying to force Musk to go through with the sale, and it seemed like the case was not going well for him.

Here’s a transcript from the Twitter Spaces audio:

Clayton: So then you change your mind again, and decided to buy it – did you do that? Did you do that?

Musk: Well, I kind of had to.

Clayton: Right. Did you do that, because you thought that a court would make you do that?

Musk: Yes.

Clayton: Right.

Musk: Yes, that is the reason.

Clayton: So you were still trying to get out of it. And then you just were advised by lawyers, “Look, you’re going to buy this?”

Musk: Yes.

Musk’s acquisition of Twitter has been a subject of controversy, with some arguing that it could lead to conflicts of interest and others speculating that Musk could use the platform to manipulate the stock market.

Despite the concerns, Musk has maintained that he has no intention of changing how Twitter operates and that he is only interested in using the platform to interact with his followers.
