Digital Car Registration Goes Mobile
Germany has officially launched the digitaler Fahrzeugschein, allowing drivers to carry their vehicle registration digitally on their smartphones instead of relying on traditional paper documents. The initiative, led by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) and the Federal Printing Office, is part of the government’s broader digitalization strategy for public services.
The newly introduced i-Kfz-App digitaler Fahrzeugschein lets users download, store, and present their Fahrzeugschein digital during roadside checks — marking a significant milestone in the modernization of German mobility administration.
A Major Step Toward Digital Vehicle Management
The digitaler Fahrzeugschein is essentially the digital version of the “Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I,” which serves as a vehicle’s identification document containing ownership and technical information. Traditionally, drivers were required to carry this document in physical form at all times while driving.
Now, thanks to the i-Kfz App, drivers can show their registration directly from their phones. This shift not only simplifies everyday vehicle management but also reduces the risk of fines for forgetting the paper copy — a common issue that often resulted in a €10 fine during roadside checks.
How the i-Kfz App Works
The i-Kfz App digitaler Fahrzeugschein is now available for both Android and iOS devices. Developed by the KBA and Bundesdruckerei under the supervision of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, the i-Kfz-App offers a secure and straightforward user experience.
Drivers can authenticate themselves using their electronic ID card (eID) to access and download their vehicle’s digital certificate. Once verified, the fahrzeugschein digital can be stored directly in the app and shown at any time.
For those who do not have their eID activated, the system also allows for an alternative method: during registration, a QR code can be issued at the local registration office or online, which can then be scanned to activate the digitaler Fahrzeugschein App.
What Else Can the i-Kfz App Do?
Beyond just storing the vehicle certificate, the i-Kfz App offers a range of features to simplify bureaucratic processes. Users can now register, deregister, or re-register their cars directly through the app — without visiting local authorities. The app also automatically updates important information such as vehicle inspections (TÜV) and emission data.
This functionality aligns with Germany’s goal of expanding its e-government services, making vehicle management faster and more efficient for millions of car owners.
Advantages and Challenges
For consumers, the digitaler Fahrzeugschein brings several benefits — convenience, time savings, and reduced paperwork. According to ADAC, the app makes it easier to present official documents during checks or while renting a car.
However, experts advise keeping the paper version handy for now. Since not all police departments are equipped to verify the digitaler Fahrzeugschein yet, the KBA recommends carrying both versions, especially when traveling abroad where digital formats are not yet recognized.
Law enforcement organizations like the German Police Union (GdP) have welcomed the move but warned that more training and technical infrastructure are needed to verify digital documents effectively and securely.
Digital Security and Verification
The i-Kfz App includes automatic data verification each time the app is opened, ensuring that stored information remains up to date. According to KBA, the app’s encryption protocols make it resistant to tampering or forgery.
Still, cybersecurity experts note that like all digital systems, digitaler Fahrzeugschein data could be targeted by hackers. The government emphasizes continuous updates and data protection as core priorities of the project.
Roadmap: From Digital Registration to Digital Wallet
The rollout of the digitaler Fahrzeugschein is just the first step in a broader digital transformation. The government plans to launch a digitaler Führerschein (digital driving license) by late 2026, years ahead of the EU’s 2030 goal for a unified digital license.
By 2027, Germany also aims to introduce a national “digitale Brieftasche” (digital wallet) — allowing citizens to securely store official documents such as ID cards, driving licenses, and vehicle registrations in one mobile app.
A New Era for Digital Mobility
The launch of the digitaler Fahrzeugschein App demonstrates Germany’s growing commitment to digital innovation in everyday life. As the i-Kfz App gains adoption, drivers can expect less paperwork, faster services, and a more connected automotive experience.
While it will take time for full implementation across all states and agencies, this initiative lays the groundwork for a fully digital, mobile-first future for German motorists.
