Digital India Act will monitor Social media, Metaverse, OTT platforms

Crimes committed on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, as well as in the Metaverse, will be subject to the Digital India Act (DIA), India’s upcoming digital regulatory framework.

Furthermore, any violations of content guidelines by OTT platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, such as spreading misinformation or inciting violence, will be investigated by the DIA. According to an ET report, the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) is working to replace the current IT Act 2000 by the Parliament’s winter session. According to the report, MeitY is ‘rushing’ to complete the legislation, which will include specific guidelines for women and children’s online safety. The Digital India Act will apply to all digital platforms, including social media platforms, OTT platforms, and online apps, as well as web3 applications such as the metaverse and blockchain.
