Centre to regulate social media algorithms through the Digital India Act

The central government is considering a proposal to hold social media platforms accountable for the algorithms they use to offer users tailored content based on their browsing history and profile.

According to sources cited by The Economic Times, the draught digital India act (DIA) will also include provisions governing cutting-edge technologies used by social media platforms such as advanced quantum computing, metaverse, and AI, among others. “The goal is to keep Indian citizens’ data from being misused.” Even if the data is stored in India, highly sophisticated algorithms can exploit it. “This must be avoided,” a source said. The Digital India Act (DIA) will include mandates governing how tech behemoths process data. It will be done in order to prevent social media giants from identifying a specific user from an anonymous dataset.
