CCI directed cab aggregators to implement transparent policies on surge pricing and data collection

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) directed cab aggregators such as Uber and Ola to implement self-regulation measures to address concerns about surge pricing. In an advisory, the CCI also urged the development of a clear and transparent policy for the distribution of surge pricing revenue among drivers and ride-hailing apps.

The competition watchdog also threatened the companies with ‘enforcement action’ if they engaged in any anti-competitive behaviour. The advisory followed a report titled ‘Market Study on Competition and Regulatory Issues Related to the Taxi and Cab Aggregator Industry: With Special Reference to Surge Pricing in the Indian Context,’ which made a number of observations about India’s current cab aggregator market. The CCI has directed all major players to ensure that the total breakdown of the total fare is clearly visible on the apps and that the surge component is clearly reflected in the invoice.
