Renowned nutritionist Luke Coutinho has called on leading food delivery platforms Swiggy and Zomato to replace plastic packaging with eco-friendly alternatives, citing health concerns over toxic chemicals like BPA that can leach from plastic when in contact with hot food. He tagged both companies, along with the FSSAI, urging a unified policy across partner restaurants to adopt safer packaging. Zomato’s CEO, Deepinder Goyal, responded by promising to spotlight restaurants that use food-safe materials, enabling customers to make better choices. While Coutinho welcomed Zomato’s initiative, he noted Swiggy has yet to respond, stressing that the issue is critical for both public health and the environment. The appeal has sparked renewed conversation around sustainable packaging in India’s fast-growing food delivery industry.
