The fault in Twitter’s coding could have been caused by an internal code glitch, and it’s unknown whether followers saw the blue badge reappearing. Twitter still preserves code that indicates whether users are heritage verified versus blue verified.
On April 20, Elon Musk removed all historical verified accounts with blue tick marks from Twitter, but permitted some celebrities to keep them. Twitter users in India must pay Rs 900 per month to achieve blue verified status.
As over 400,000 legacy verified users said goodbye to their blue tick marks, some celebrities were offered a free Twitter Blue subscription ‘on behalf of Musk’. Later, Musk announced that verified accounts on the platform would be prioritised, potentially giving people who have had their accounts verified special attention.
The brief display of the blue badge may have given hope to legacy verified account holders who were upset when their blue tick mark was removed. However, the bug was quickly fixed, and it is unknown whether it will occur again.
The blue verified symbol on Twitter is intended to indicate that the account is genuine and of public interest. The badge is bestowed upon important individuals, brands, organisations, and other influencers. The historical blue tick was awarded manually at first, but the blue verified badge is now awarded in accordance with Twitter’s norms and procedures.
