Amitabh Kant, a seasoned bureaucrat and former CEO of NITI Aayog, has stepped down from his role as India’s G20 Sherpa, marking the end of a distinguished 45-year career in public service as of June 16, 2025. Since his appointment in July 2022, he played a crucial role during India’s G20 presidency in 2023, including helping secure consensus on the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration and advocating for the African Union’s inclusion. Throughout his career, Kant was instrumental in driving key national initiatives such as the “Incredible India” and “God’s Own Country” tourism campaigns, Ease of Doing Business reforms, Make in India, Startup India, the Atal Innovation Mission, the Green Hydrogen Mission, and digital infrastructure projects. In his farewell note, he thanked Prime Minister Modi and other senior leaders and shared his intention to now contribute through work with startups, think tanks, and academic institutions as part of India’s ongoing development vision under “Viksit Bharat.”
