MeitY intends to conduct a quarterly compliance audit of social media platforms

The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) is tightening its grip on social media platforms and plans to conduct quarterly compliance audits of these platforms.

According to PTI, the ministry has established a mechanism to audit compliance of social media intermediaries with IT rules on a quarterly basis. The ministry will use this audit to determine whether social media companies are correctly reporting on grievances filed with them. It will also examine whether the companies’ actions are in accordance with the rules. Under IT Rules 2021, social media intermediaries with more than 5 million users are required to publish monthly compliance reports. This week, all major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, publishedtheir compliance reports for the month of June.
