Elon Musk’s X brings audio and video calls to Android phones: All the details

X’s audio/video calls feature competes with WhatsApp and Zoom, potentially attracting their users to X.

After an initial iOS launch, X — the platform formerly known as Twitter — is finally bringing in audio and video calls for Android users. An X engineer working on the feature made the revelation on a post on the social media platform. “Audio and video calls on X slowly rolling out for android users today! update your app and call your mother.”
Introduced as an early version on iOS in October, the calls feature allows users to connect directly through the platform, sans phone numbers.

Just like on iOS, initiating calls remains a privilege for X Premium subscribers (formerly known as Twitter Blue).

How to make audio/video calls on X
The feature is simple to use. Navigate to the settings menu and select the privacy and safety tab. Within this section, locate the direct messages option. You will find a toggle switch for enabling audio and video calling, which you can ensure is turned off to enhance your privacy.

Alternatively, you have the option to manage who can initiate calls to you on X. You can set limitations such as allowing calls only from individuals in your address book, verified users, or people you follow. Implementing these restrictions can be beneficial in preventing undesired calls, as it eliminates the necessity for the caller to possess your phone number to get in touch with you.

This rollout marks another step in Elon Musk’s ambitious vision for X as an “everything app.” Musk has cited the example of WeChat in China and wants to emulate that in some sense.WeChat in China has successfully blending social media, messaging, mobile payments, and even government services into a single, ubiquitous platform. The addition of audio and video calls is a crucial step in this direction. It allows X to compete directly with established communication platforms like WhatsApp and Zoom, potentially chipping away at their user base.

Long before Edgar Wright’s The Running Man hits theaters this week, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had been thinking about making it. He read the original 1982 novel by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman) as a boy and excitedly went to theaters in 1987 to see the film version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wright enjoyed the adaptation but was a little let down by just how different it was from the novel. Years later, after he’d become a successful… Source link
