Google to stop spam backdoor for political groups

Google plans to discontinue a pilot programme that let some political campaign emails bypass spam filters in Gmail at the end of this month, the media reported.

According to The Verge, the tech giant started the programme in September of last year in response to Republican (a US political committee) complaints that its algorithms unjustly flag conservative fundraising emails as spam. According to the report, this programme exempts political candidates, party committees, and leadership political action committees from Google’s spam detection systems. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) and eight states have filed a lawsuit against Google for allegedly having a monopoly on products related to digital advertising technology.
