One Electric expands overseas, commences EV motorcycle production in Kenya

Mumbai-based electric two-wheeler startup, One Electric, has embarked on its overseas expansion strategy by commencing the production of electric motorcycle models in Kenya. This move is part of the startup’s initiative to establish its presence beyond Indian borders and tap into the growing EV market in other regions.

One Electric Joint Venture to Accelerate Local Manufacturing in Kenya

One Electric has formed a joint venture with a Kenyan vehicle manufacturing company to initiate the production of its Kridn electric motorcycles, according to a report by ET. At present, the startup is sourcing components, technology, and technical expertise from India. By collaborating with local manufacturers, the startup aims to enhance its operational scalability in Africa and facilitate localized after-sales service.

One Electric Multiple Production Plants and Localisation Plans

The startup is preparing to launch production at a second plant in Kenya within the next two months. Gaurav Uppal, CEO of One Electric, emphasized that the company’s engineers are closely overseeing the training and manufacturing processes to ensure quality standards. The CEO affirmed that the first production batch is on track to be completed within two weeks.

Phased Approach to Localisation

One Electric envisions multiple manufacturing facilities across Africa and Asia as part of its expansion strategy. Uppal outlined plans for phased localisation based on the viability of the local industry. The initial focus will be on localising components like handlebars, stands, and carriers. As the local ecosystem matures, the startup intends to progressively increase localisation in Kenya.

Ambitious Plans for Global Reach

Looking ahead, One Electric’s ambitions extend beyond Africa. The startup has intentions to establish a battery manufacturing plant on the continent by the end of the year. With eyes on South America and Southeast Asia, the startup has already initiated discussions with potential local partners. Having launched in 2019, the startup’s Kridn range offers four electric vehicles tailored for intracity commuting, and it has expanded its market presence to six countries. In its pursuit of growth, the startup competes with prominent EV manufacturers such as the startup, Ather, TVS, and Hero, as well as other emerging players in the e-bike space.

Electric bikes are working to achieve popularity like e-scooters. The startup has joined a few Indian original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the EV bike segment. Notable players in this niche include Ultraviolette, Yulu, and Kabira Mobility. Moreover, the startup has announced plans to enter this segment in 2024 with the introduction of four e-bike models.
