Elon Musk admits X ‘may fail’ after glitch deletes Twitter photos

Elon Musk, the proprietor of the platform now known as X (formerly Twitter), has voiced concerns about the potential failure of the social media site. This statement comes in response to a glitch that led to the deletion of images posted before December 2014. In a post on the renamed X platform, Musk asserted that there is currently a lack of exceptional “social networks.”

Twitter Glitch Results in Deletion of Pre-2014 Pictures and Links

Over the weekend, a glitch on the platform caused images and links from posts made prior to December 2014 to be removed. Affected posts displayed broken links in place of the previously existing images and videos.

Notable Images Affected, Some Restored

The glitch caught the attention of users, including technologist Tom Coates, who referred to it as “epic vandalism by Musk.” The famous 2014 Oscars selfie by Ellen DeGeneres was also erased but later restored. While some speculated that the glitch was a cost-saving measure, others attributed it to changes made in 2016 when enhanced URL enrichment was introduced.

Multiple Glitches Impacting Twitter

The glitch follows reports of slowdowns when accessing X compared to other social media sites like Facebook, Threads, and Instagram. A five-second delay was also noted for links to certain news sites. Earlier this year, users experienced an inability to post or send messages, and the platform faced challenges with revenue, including a significant drop in advertising revenue.

Financial and Operational Challenges Amid Musk’s Takeover

Since Musk’s takeover of the platform, Twitter has undergone significant changes, including substantial job cuts. Despite Musk’s cost-cutting efforts, revenue challenges persist. The platform has encountered lawsuits demanding over $14 million in unpaid bills since Musk assumed control. Despite financial and operational challenges, Musk actively leads the platform through various changes. These changes aim to revive its performance in the changing social media landscape.
