Unacademy incident sparks debate on political expression at workplace

A recent incident at Unacademy, where a teacher was terminated for expressing a political opinion during an online class, has reignited discussions about the boundaries of employees’ rights to discuss political matters at the workplace.

Startups and Politics: A Growing Dilemma

This incident has sparked a broader conversation about whether Indian startups are prepared to address political matters in the workplace, especially as they gain prominence in the lead-up to the 2024 General Elections.

Unacademy Response to Controversy

Unacademy dismissed judicial services tutor Karan Sangwan. He urged students to vote for educated candidates in a viral video. Unacademy’s co-founder, Roman Saini, responded. He stated that the platform enforces a strict Code of Conduct. The aim is to ensure unbiased education delivery. Sharing personal opinions in the classroom can wrongly influence learners, he mentioned.

Startups Caught in Political Crossfire

Indian startups have historically embraced open cultures, but navigating controversies related to political and social issues remains a challenge. Zomato faced a similar situation in 2021 when an employee’s comments about language led to controversy and public debate.

Balancing Freedom of Speech and Workplace Guidelines

The Unacademy incident raises questions about the limits of freedom of speech and expression in the workplace. While private sector employees lack specific guidelines on political expression, companies can include clauses in employment agreements to manage sensitive comments.

Legal experts suggest that the termination of the Unacademy teacher may be legally questionable, as his comment was generic and did not target any specific political entities. However, no legal action has been reported yet.

With the upcoming 2024 General Elections and the increasing role of technology in politics, startups are likely to face challenges in navigating political debates while respecting employee rights and maintaining workplace guidelines. As startups gain mainstream recognition, their ability to manage such issues will become crucial for their reputation and success.
