The union government has taken strong action against spam job calls by banning more than 66,000 WhatsApp accounts over the past three months. This move is part of the government’s efforts to curb fraudulent activities and ensure the safety of digital communication platforms.
Minister Addresses Rise in Fraudulent Spam Calls
On Thursday (August 17), the Union Information Technology Minister addressed an event. He emphasized the recent surge in fraudulent spam calls on WhatsApp. The minister disclosed, “We’ve observed a recent increase in fake spam calls on the platform. To tackle this, we’ve blocked 66,000 suspicious accounts.”
Government Crackdown on Fraudulent Transactions
In addition to blocking WhatsApp accounts, authorities have deactivated 8 lakh payment wallets used for fraudulent transactions. The minister emphasized the government’s determination to tackle cyber fraud by taking decisive action against those involved in fraudulent activities.
Impact on Cyber Frauds and Digital India
Vaishnaw, the Information Technology Minister, highlighted that these measures pressurise fraudsters and expects to significantly impact cyber frauds in the country. He underscored the government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of Digital India beneficiaries.
Government Utilizing Technology for Improved Verification
The recently launched ‘Sanchar Saathi’ portal and the ASTR tool have strengthened the government’s efforts. These solutions use Artificial Intelligence and Facial Recognition. They analyze millions of connections, identify suspicious activities, and blacklist fraudulent points-of-sale (PoS).
The government’s proactive stance is expected to enhance cybersecurity and promote the integrity of digital communications within the Indian consumer internet space by countering fraudulent spam calls and transactions. This move aligns with the broader goals of ensuring a secure and trustworthy digital environment for citizens across the nation.
