WhatsApp launches standalone app for Google’s Wear OS smartwatches

WhatsApp has finally released its standalone app for smartwatches running Google’s Wear OS, following much anticipation and months of beta testing. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the launch, allowing users to initiate new conversations, respond to messages, and take VoIP calls without needing their connected phone with them.

WhatsApp- App Compatibility and Functionality

The app, now rolling out globally, is compatible with smartwatches running Wear OS 3. Users can send and receive text and voice messages, emojis, and quick replies directly from their wrist, making communication more accessible and convenient.

Google’s Efforts to Compete with Apple Watch

At the developer-focused I/O conference in May, Google unveiled the upcoming WhatsApp app for Wear OS, along with new and improved apps from third-party companies like Spotify and Peloton. Additionally, Google announced updates to its own apps, such as Google Home, Gmail, and Calendar, to deliver an enhanced experience to Wear OS-based smartwatches.

Wear OS vs. Apple’s watchOS

In contrast to Wear OS, Apple’s watchOS does not currently have a standalone WhatsApp app, limiting users to a more basic experience. While Apple Watch users can view incoming messages and respond to them on the watch’s screen with proper notification settings, Wear OS aims to challenge Apple’s dominance in the smartwatch market. According to Google, Wear OS has seen remarkable growth since the release of Wear OS 3 in 2021, positioning it as the fastest-growing smartwatch platform globally.
