Hasselblad X2D II 100C: Next-Gen Medium Format Camera Raises the Bar

Hasselblad has officially unveiled its highly anticipated Hasselblad X2D II 100C, the successor to the X2D 100C launched in 2022. The new medium format camera is designed to cater to professional photographers seeking the highest image quality, improved performance, and cutting-edge features. With enhanced autofocus, true HDR support, and a lighter, more refined body, the Hasselblad X2D II makes a bold statement in the premium photography segment.

A Leap in Autofocus Performance

One of the most significant upgrades in the Hasselblad X2D II is the introduction of continuous autofocus (AF-C), a first for the brand’s medium format cameras. The system now uses 425 phase detection points, up from 294 in its predecessor. In addition, Hasselblad has integrated LiDAR-based focusing support and an AF assist light to improve accuracy in low-light conditions. While the AF-C feature requires updated XCD lenses and does not work with the electronic shutter, it marks a milestone for Hasselblad in offering faster and more reliable subject tracking.

True HDR and Enhanced Image Processing

At the heart of the Hasselblad X2D II 100C is a re-engineered 100-megapixel medium format sensor. This new sensor supports 16-bit color depth and introduces a true HDR mode, with formats such as HDR-HEIF and Ultra-HDR-JPG. Hasselblad claims that this delivers richer tones, lifelike colors, and more details in highlights and shadows. Photographers will find the HDR functionality particularly useful for high-contrast shooting scenarios, although some modes like bracketing temporarily disable it.

The company has also enhanced its in-camera image processing to ensure more natural rendering, catering to professionals who prioritize color science and precision.

Improved Handling and Design Tweaks

Although the Hasselblad X2D II closely resembles its predecessor, subtle refinements enhance usability. The body now weighs 840 grams, making it slightly lighter than the original X2D. The 3.6-inch tilting touchscreen display has been significantly upgraded, offering a brightness of up to 1400 nits compared to the previous 800 nits, improving visibility in outdoor conditions.

Additional ergonomics improvements include a redesigned handgrip, a five-way joystick, and eight customizable buttons. Hasselblad has also doubled down on stabilization, offering five-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS) that now compensates up to ten stops — a remarkable feat for a 100-megapixel sensor.

Storage and Connectivity

The Hasselblad X2D II 100C is equipped with an internal 1TB SSD, ensuring photographers have ample space for ultra-high-resolution files. It also supports CFexpress Type B cards for expanded storage and faster workflows.

New Lens and Accessories

Alongside the camera, Hasselblad introduced the XCD 2.8–4/35–100E zoom lens. Covering focal lengths equivalent to 28–76mm in full-frame, the lens maintains a fast aperture of f/2.8 throughout. Built with 16 elements in 13 groups, including three aspherical and five ED elements, it promises sharpness and edge-to-edge clarity.

Complementing the system, Hasselblad launched three new filters (UV, ND8, CPL) and a 20-liter “Vandra” camera backpack designed to hold a body, two lenses, and accessories.

Pricing and Availability

The Hasselblad X2D II 100C is now available for purchase. The camera body is priced at €7200, while the new 35–100mm zoom lens costs €4800. Accessories such as the Vandra backpack retail at €430, with filters priced between €260 and €470.

A Strong Statement in the Professional Market

The Hasselblad X2D II represents a meaningful step forward for medium format photography. Its improved autofocus, genuine HDR capabilities, and enhanced stabilization push boundaries in a segment where image quality and precision are paramount. While the steep price tag makes it accessible mainly to professionals and high-end enthusiasts, Hasselblad continues to reinforce its position as a leader in luxury camera systems.

For photographers demanding uncompromised image quality and robust performance, the Hasselblad X2D II 100C is set to be one of the most desirable tools on the market in 2025.

Long before Edgar Wright’s The Running Man hits theaters this week, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had been thinking about making it. He read the original 1982 novel by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman) as a boy and excitedly went to theaters in 1987 to see the film version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wright enjoyed the adaptation but was a little let down by just how different it was from the novel. Years later, after he’d become a successful… Source link
