Legendary Alfa Romeo 8C Torpedo Set to Shatter Auction Records at Pebble Beach

Alfa Romeo, the iconic Italian automotive marque, is once again making headlines—this time not for a modern supercar, but a legendary piece of motoring history. A rare 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Torpedo, hailed as “the premier prewar Italian sports car”, is expected to fetch upwards of $5.5 million at the upcoming Gooding & Company Pebble Beach Auction on August 15-16, 2025.

The Alfa Romeo 8C series holds a revered place in automotive history. Engineered under the guidance of Vittorio Jano, this model features a supercharged 2.3-liter straight-eight engine, capable of producing 138 horsepower—a staggering figure in its time. With a potential price tag translating to nearly $40,000 per horsepower, it starkly contrasts today’s average automotive cost of around $837 per hp.

This particular Alfa Romeo 8C 2300, chassis 2311207, stands out not only for its engineering but for its bespoke design. The Torpedo body was crafted by the French coachbuilder Carrosserie Figoni, known for producing only a handful of 8C 2300 bodies between 1932 and 1935. Its unique streamlined form lacks side windows or excessive ornamentation, opting instead for an understated elegance and aerodynamic purity that predates the modern design language we now take for granted.

A Provenance Rich in Legacy

First ordered by Parisian collector Louis Jeantet, this Alfa Romeo has enjoyed a fascinating journey across continents and decades. After surviving World War II in France, it passed through the UK before heading to the U.S., where it was owned by noted historian Joel Finn and General Motors executive Stanford Landell. It was meticulously restored in the 1960s and has since won multiple awards, including Best of Show at the Carnival of Cars in Detroit.

Later, it joined the garages of renowned collectors like Karl Eric Fröjd, Henry W. Petronis, and its current unnamed owner. The car has twice graced the lawns of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, in 2013 and again in 2022, boasting a pristine dark blue over red livery, restored to concours-quality standards.

Why This Alfa Romeo Matters Now

As vintage car enthusiasts and collectors prepare for the Pebble Beach auctions, this Alfa Romeo represents more than just a collector’s trophy. It is a moving piece of motorsport heritage—a car that raced at Le Mans and the 1000 Miglia, helping cement Alfa Romeo’s dominance during the golden age of racing.

In the world of classic cars, few vehicles offer the allure, pedigree, and performance history of the 8C 2300. For many, it’s not just a car; it’s a symbol of automotive artistry and engineering excellence.

Alfa Romeo’s Modern Relevance

Though this story centers on a pre-war legend, it serves as a strong reminder of the Alfa Romeo brand’s enduring legacy. From classic beauties like the 8C 2300 to today’s Giulia Quadrifoglio and the forthcoming Alfa Romeo Milano EV, the brand continues to blend performance, design, and passion. Enthusiasts hope that this upcoming auction will reignite broader interest in Alfa Romeo’s past and future.

Long before Edgar Wright’s The Running Man hits theaters this week, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had been thinking about making it. He read the original 1982 novel by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman) as a boy and excitedly went to theaters in 1987 to see the film version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wright enjoyed the adaptation but was a little let down by just how different it was from the novel. Years later, after he’d become a successful… Source link
