Learner drivers across the UK are hitting a frustrating roadblock, as driving test wait times reach an all-time high. According to the latest figures from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), the waiting period at over 200 test centres—including Northwich, the closest option for Knutsford residents—has ballooned to the maximum limit of 24 weeks. The driving test backlog is creating a bottleneck for thousands of new drivers hoping to gain their licenses.
This ongoing challenge in the driving test booking system reflects a wider national problem. Centres in surrounding areas such as Chester, Crewe, Macclesfield, Manchester, Warrington, and Widnes are also reporting five-month delays. The average national wait time stands at 22 weeks, a sharp rise from 14 weeks just 18 months ago.

The DVSA has responded to growing concerns with a seven-point action plan aiming to reduce the driving test backlog. The agency’s goal is to bring waiting times down to seven weeks by summer 2026.
DVSA Chief Executive Loveday Ryder said, “Our goal is to make driving test booking easier and fairer for learner drivers. We are making steady progress and deeply value the feedback we’ve received from learners, parents, and instructors during our recent consultation.”
These changes are part of the DVSA’s broader efforts to modernize and streamline the car driving test booking process, which currently struggles under immense demand.
Frustration Among Learners and Instructors
Emma Bush, Managing Director of the AA Driving School, emphasized the urgent need for improvement. “With the vast majority of driving test centres now showing waits at the maximum the system will allow, the situation cannot get much worse,” she noted.
Bush confirmed that while new DVSA measures were implemented in April, their impact has yet to be fully realized. “We would expect these changes to take a few months to show results. However, it is still disappointing to see learners battling such long delays just to make a driving test booking,” she added.

Driving instructors and schools in Northwich and the surrounding areas are feeling the pressure as students are forced to delay not only their tests but their independence, work opportunities, and in some cases, job applications that require a full license.
One local instructor described the situation as “unprecedented,” noting that many students are now booking their driving tests far outside their preferred locations—sometimes even in other regions—in a desperate bid to shorten their wait.

Given the current climate, industry experts recommend that learners:
- Regularly check for cancellations on the DVSA website.
- Consider early morning or weekday slots for quicker driving test booking.
- Discuss flexible test locations with instructors.

A Call for Government Action
